NIGEL HUMPHREYS POET

asks: Why is there anything ?

Nigel Humphreys was born at Newport, Shropshire where he was educated at Adam's Grammar School. He graduated at Exeter University. Most of his and his wife's extended family still live in the Newport area and the West Midlands. However for most of his adult life he has lived with his wife on or near the coast of West Wales. He has one son.

Since relaunching his writing career in 2003 he is published widely throughout the United Kingdom in Poetry Journals and Anthologies.

In 2006 he won two International Poetry competitions, had honourable mentions in others and he was invited to read his work at the Hay-on-Wye Festival and the Edinburgh Festival.

In 2007 his first Collection The Hawk's Mewl was published by Arbor Vitae Press, London. He also won first prize in the Decanto International Poetry Competition.

He is profoundly involved with Aberyswtyth University Arts Centre Poetry Workshop, a member of The Word Distillery poets and actively involved in the online Workshop run by Earlyworks Press.  He most recently read his poems at the Darwin Centenary Celebrations in Shrewsbury. (His work is currently featured in the Darwin exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum (below).)  Also at the Against The Grain performance with the Distillery Poets in October at the University Arts Centre and in November at the The Poetry Society's The Poetry Place, Covent Garden, London where he will be reading again in February 2010.

His second book A Favour of Parallel is to be published in March of 2010 again by Arbor Vitae Press, London.
